Mystic Aquarium beluga treated with bacteriophages for multidrug-resistant E. coli pneumonia
Veterinarians at Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut and the University of Florida treated Jetta, an 11-year-old beluga with chronic pneumonia caused by multidrug-resistant E. coli, with bacteriophages chosen for her strain, delivered partly through a nebulizer made for a beluga blowhole; it is described as a first for marine mammals. Her care team has found no recurrence or negative side effects in the year since, and the research is being prepared for publication.
